Snowbirding at MacDill FamCamp

Setting up for a warm winter in Tampa, FL

We spent 2 beautiful months in Tampa, Florida this past winter. Our escape was perfectly timed as we missed a snow and ice storm at the Homestead back in North Carolina.

Back in December of 2020 we put our names on the MacDill FamCamp waiting list for January/February 2022. Yes, they had a waiting list over a year out! We gave them a refundable $100 deposit and waited for their call. In September of 2021 they contacted us and asked if we still wanted to camp. The campsite they had available was in their “annex” area, just a little over a mile from the main FamCamp. This was ideal, we didn’t care where they put us as long as we had full hook ups and were bicycling distance to the ocean.

MacDill is a very popular winter destination and requires planning if you want to stay for an extended time in the peak season. The waiting list for 2023 was already full when we arrived. We may give them a call this October to get on their list for 2024. MacDill FamCamp boasts a private beach, Marina, post office boxes for RVers who wish to have their mail forwarded and a huge laundry room/shower facility.

Our stay was enjoyable. The Tampa Bay weather was beautiful with a mix of sun and rain for the first few weeks. Mid-February brought consistent warm, sunny, non-windy beach weather. We spent most days on the beach, reading, dolphin watching and soaking up the Florida sun!

We arrived January 15 and stayed through March 15.

MacDill Air Force Base also has a beautiful golf course, a bowling alley, biking and walking trails, and a library. Although we could have easily remained on base and had every necessity, we did venture out in the Tampa area to experience some of the local life. Next post will be about some local sights and experiences in Ybor City.
