I was raised in Oklahoma. It’s also where Mark and I met and got married. Our first duty station after Mark joined the Air Force was in Altus, Oklahoma and both of our children were born in Oklahoma. So before we jump in our truck and head towards Canada, we got on a plane and flew to Oklahoma. My mom and many of my relatives live there.
We were glad to see family and friends and help mom with a few projects around her house. We learned a little about my family history while looking through some old family photos, letters and obits. While in Oklahoma we also visited several “favorite places” …Taco Bueno where we first met; Sonic, home of the Rt. 44 Cherry Limeade; and Braums, where you can get a 99 cent twist cone all day, every day! Yes, we ate our way across Oklahoma!
My favorite brother and sister-in-law (Kevin and Kim of the Awesome Possum) joined us there and we had fun, laughing and playing games. At one point we took a little road trip from Shawnee to Weatherford to see my Aunt Mona.
We also celebrated my brother’s 50th birthday a little early!
A lot of famous people came from Oklahoma: James Garner, Johnny Bench and Garth Brooks for example. While waiting at the Oklahoma City Airport for our return flight to Maryland I took advantage of a photo opportunity with one of my favorite Oklahomans, Will Rogers.
My friend Will and me
Now we are back in Maryland and prepping for our trip north. We sold my car, got our generator out and checked over, washed down Old Glory and got some routine maintenance done on Babe. We will travel to Green Lakes State Park in Fayetteville, NY soon! From there, we head to Maine for a couple of weeks and then to Canada. We will be updating the blog as we go along so check back often.
Great! Safe travels!
